FAQ

To access athletics and recreation facilities at the University of Victoria all UVic students, staff and faculty, as well as community members need to register. For those who have UVic NetLink IDs this is your primary login and for those in the community it is an easy one-time process to create your account.

For assistance in setting up your account or registering online for a program, please e-mail vikesrec@uvic.ca or call 250-472-4000. You can also visit us in person at the CARSA Membership Services counter located on Gabriola Road between McKenzie Avenue and Ring Road in Victoria.

What is the mandatory Athletics and Recreation (ATRS) student fee and why do I have to pay it?

For: Students

UVic students pay a mandatory Athletics and Recreation (ATRS) student fee as part of their tuition. The mandatory Athletics and Recreation (ATRS) fee is not a gym fee or a service fee. It provides essential support for ATRS facilities and ancillary operations. It funds programming related to inclusive, healthy, active living and varsity sports on campus, playing a vital role in supporting the mental and physical health of all UVic students.

Additionally, it supports hundreds of students participating in Vikes sports clubs and various free student events on campus, including Thunderfest, Holi Colour Run, Dodge in the Dark and the Silent Disco and more. It also allows for subsidized student rates at the CARSA Fitness and Weight Centre, the Climbing Centre, and for intramural leagues.

UVic students who have paid the Athletics and Recreation fees gain access to:

  • Drop-in recreation (Basketball, volleyball, badminton, ping pong, squash, tennis, pickleball, open rec)
  • CARSA squash courts
  • CARSA stretch zone
  • Access to CARSA equipment rental
  • Tickets to regular season Vikes home games

additional fees may apply based on availability

Students must pay additional fees to access the Fitness and Weight Centre, Climbing Centre, registered programs and intramurals.

Is my student status assessed or non-assessed?

For: Students

Assessed: Students who pay the Athletics and Recreation Mandatory Fee as part of their UVic tuition. All full-time and part-time students attending classes on campus pay this fee.

Non-assessed: Students who do not pay the Athletics and Recreation Mandatory Fee as part of their UVic tuition. This includes students who study by distance education.

What does the ATRS fee go towards?

For: Students

The ATRS fee accounts for just under one-third of the ATRS’ annual operating budget to support facilities and operations. As such, it does not increase when programs, services or facilities are added, nor does it decrease when changes are made to existing programs, services or facilities. Additionally, it supports hundreds of students participating in Vikes sports clubs and various free student events on campus, including Thunderfest, Holi Colour Run, Dodge in the Dark and the Silent Disco. It also allows for subsidized student rates at the CARSA Fitness and Weight Centre, the Climbing Centre, and for intramural leagues.

UVic students who have paid the Athletics and Recreation fees with their tuition automatically gain access to:

  • Drop-in recreation (Basketball, volleyball, badminton, ping pong, squash, tennis, pickleball, open rec)
  • CARSA squash courts
  • CARSA stretch zone
  • Access to CARSA equipment rental
  • Tickets to all regular season Vikes home games

additional fees may apply based on availability

Why do part-time students have to pay the same fee as full-time students?

For: Students

On average, UVic part-time students use ATRS facilities and services more often than full-time students.

I don’t use the gym, why do I have to pay this fee?

For: Students

As a member of the UVic community, your contribution through the ATRS fee helps to provide inclusive and accessible opportunities for healthy living on campus. The fee supports hundreds of students participating Vikes sports clubs and various free student events on campus, including Orientation/Thunderfest, Holi Colour Run, Dodge in the Dark, and the Silent Disco and more. It also allows for subsidized student rates at the CARSA Fitness and Weight Centre, the Climbing Centre, and for intramural leagues.
