What is the UVCP

The UVCP is a collaboration of on-campus summer camp programs Vikes Athletics and Recreation and Science Venture. The two organizations have partnered to create a unified approach to inclusion for youth in our communities. Our inclusion workers will work with both camp programs, depending on the needs of the individuals attending our respective camps.

Description

Science Venture instructors are a team of dynamic, passionate and engaging leaders who are committed to delivering hands-on science, technology, and engineering programs for youth. Our team strives to provide high-quality high-impact programs to youth in our community, so they can build confidence and be successful in their future. Science Venture and Vikes strive to have an inclusive environment for children with diverse needs. The Youth Inclusion Worker will provide one on one support for children with diverse needs within our programming.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one support to children in our on-campus summer camp programs.
  • Collaborate with Science Venture and Vikes Instructional staff to support children who require it.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding participant’s needs and conditions.
  • Work with the Inclusion coordinator to plan, develop and implement appropriate activities and experiences for campers who need support.
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of the supported camper as well as the greater camper community.
  • Contribute to the entire Science Venture and Vikes communities.

As the Youth Inclusion Worker, you will be assigned a specific camper with identified needs each week.

The needs of each camper may be different each week. Your role will be to assist the camper with their participation in our summer camp programs and to communicate and advocate with Instructional Staff of child’s needs. Camp themes vary from general Science, Engineering, Coding, Ecology, Kinesiology, STEAM, outdoor adventurers, indoor climbing, soccer, rugby, and water sport camp. You will work with university students studying topics related to the camp themes they are delivering.

Training

Training week(s) will begin in late June, in-person. There will be virtual training in coordinator with the UVCP Inclusion Coordinator, Supported Child Development, and Vancouver Island Health Authority.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Pass a Criminal background check when hired
  • Complete First Aid training with CPR C

Key Competencies

  • Experience providing one on one support to children with various special needs
  • Experience working/volunteering with youth in a camp or educational setting
  • Passion and interest in education, science, technology, and math
  • Passion for recreation, athletics, and sport development
  • Ability to act as a role model to youth and work in a team environment
  • Openness to learning and feedback
  • Ability to be resourceful, flexible and adaptable to a fast-paced work environment

Support for this position is provided by Supported Child Development. Availability of work is dependent on the number of youths who need support each week of camp. Should there be no campers who require support, there will be no work provided.
