Advocacy for Inclusive Recreation logo

The AIR Program (Advocacy for Inclusive Recreation) is a collaborative program hosted by the Office of Student Life, Vikes Athletics and Recreation, Native Students Union, Gender Empowerment Centre, Society for Students with a Disability, Students of Colour Collective, and UVic Pride Collective. This program is for students who identify as members of the aforementioned Advocacy groups on Campus. The goal of AIR is to provide access in an inclusive, safe, and equitable manner to students of the five UVic Advocacy groups on campus. We want to provide accessible movement-activities that will promote wellness and community on campus.

ACCESSIBLE

Vikes Recreation inclusive and accessible program - Campus Safe Walk

Campus Safe Walk

Free

Campus Security Services provides a safe walk service, which is available to members of the University Community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The escort service is provided from building to building, building to vehicle, and vice versa within the boundaries of the campus, including Ian Stewart Complex.

When receiving a call for an escort, the Security Officers taking the request will make every possible attempt to have the safe walk service to your location as soon as possible. However, at times situations, eg., heavy call load, weather conditions, etc., do arise that may delay the escort. A call back number will enable us to contact you in the event of a lengthy delay.

Safewalk can also be requested by calling from any of Campus Security's 15 Direct Dial Phones located around the University campus.

Requirements: Any staff/student can access Campus Safe Walk services.

Vikes Recreation inclusive and accessible program - Field Hockey Play4All

Field Hockey Play4All

Free

Field Hockey is a team sport that develops fundamental movement, self-regulation and collaboration skills.

Field Hockey was first included in the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin (2023). During the Special Olympics Latin America Games (2024), one participant shared how there were “smiles and acceptance abound. There is no room for comparison; instead, there is always a place for adaptation”. Field Hockey is an activity that shows how working together, everything can be conquered!

UVic hosts its own Field Hockey program that is a 10-week free indoor sports program for children and youth with intellectual disabilities. Participants will discover how to play field hockey using the ‘CAPS’ experiential learning method (cognitive, affective, psychomotor & social skills). This program is offered with a high coach-to-participant ratio, so participants feel supported, have appropriate instructional guidance and feedback, and have ample time to practice and learn new skills in a safe, fun, and welcoming environment.

UVic equity statement

UVic is committed to upholding the values of equity, diversity, inclusion and human rights in our living, learning and work environments. We know that diversity underpins excellence, and that we all share responsibility for creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive community. In pursuit of our values, we seek members who will work respectfully and constructively with differences and across levels of power.

We actively encourage applications from members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to, First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, and all other Indigenous peoples; members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs, or place of origin; persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities; persons who identify as women; and persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We recognize that many of these identities intersect and that therefore, equity, diversity and inclusion can be complex.
